My BIO-film
Get Out There
_edited.jpg)

I am an Assistant Professor aka Lecturer in the UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering. My background has been in the development of processes and process improvements for the Environmental and Energy Sectors. After completing my PhD and a Post Doc examining the factors effecting the scale up of the Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor, I worked for Veolia Environment. While there I worked in USA on the Design and Build of Industrial Wastewater treatment Plants and subsequently in the R&D Centre Anjou Recherche, in Paris. Following on from this I returned to UCD working on the MABR.
This lead to the creating of the spin out company OxyMem, which is the first company to commercialize the MABR technology. Currently my research is focused two complementary topics, 1) the move towards the recovery of all resources from WasteWater Treatment facilities and the use of gasses in the future interconnected energy network.
Investigating and Understanding

The Chemical and Energy ReCycling Lab is based in the School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering UCD. Researchers in the Lab are focused on improving the sustainability of society through the use of renewable energy to produce, recover and reuse molecules which can displace the use of fossil based molecules.
This includes the production of Hydrogen from renewable sources, the recovery of value from waste streams and the production of molecules as energy vectors which can help decarbonise the energy system.
The researchers in the lab explore all engineering based aspects. Including process simulation, lab scale and pilot scale testing, data collection for model validation, system optomisation, and techno-economic modelling.

Published Work

Ireland’s future natural gas supply: How well connected is the island?
With Corrib due to run out, coupled with rising demand, the question arises: do we need another source of gas, or are the current interconnectors more than capable of providing all of our natural gas needs for the foreseeable future
The flexiable MABR
The Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) has moved from the pilot stage through the demonstration stage and is now a commercial available technology for the biological treatment of wastewater. The MABR is carrying on with the current trend of engineering reactors to provide specific conditions which take advantage of non-sterile environmental bio-technology processes. The counter diffusion of the oxygen and substrate in the membrane attached biofilm provid a unique and controllable environment for processes such as simultaneous nitrification/denitrification as well as high rate systems utilising pure Oxygen. The OxyMem MABR which utilised PDMS hollow fibre Membranes can be used in various configurations to achieve efficient and economical treatment outcomes
